Halloween on a porch is a strange piece of programming. The audience changes every ninety seconds. Half of it is under four feet tall. The other half is holding a phone and a bag of someone else’s candy. Whatever is playing has to work at a glance, from the sidewalk, for a child who has never been told what a haunted house is supposed to sound like.
So this one isn’t a playlist of Halloween songs. There’s no “Monster Mash” and no “Thriller.” Nobody has to sing along, and nothing on it will be stuck in your head on November 1. It is mostly atmosphere: wind through bare trees, a gate on rusty hinges, wolves a long way off, a bell that tolls once and then thinks better of it. Mixed in are a handful of short instrumental pieces that sound like a film just before the door opens.
The order is built around how the evening actually goes. The opening stretch leans on weather and distance, for the early arrivals in costumes still too new to be scary. The middle holds the house itself: doors, chains, footsteps, a clock at midnight. Then the witches turn up, cackling over a cauldron, which is the most fun the whole night has. Near the end comes a ghost carnival and a mad scientist for the older kids who come by after dark.
What we left out matters as much as what went in. There are no screams, no chainsaws, nothing that sounds like someone actually getting hurt. Those belong at an adults-only party, not on a street where a three-year-old in a pumpkin suit is working up the courage to ring your bell. Some tracks have voices: whispers, a witch’s laugh. None of them use words.
Put it on low, a little under the volume of normal conversation. It should reach the end of the walk and no further. If a neighbor can hear it from across the street, it’s too loud.

The start of the witch stretch. Knocks, cackles and a bubbling cauldron run for about fifteen minutes. That's the silliest part of the night, and it’s silly on purpose.
