Three Hours in the Haunted House

A very scary Halloween, about three hours long: horror film, TV and game scores, eerie modern classical music, dark ambient, and the creaks, chains and footsteps of a haunted house. Lights off.

Mostly instrumental. Voices we know of: the choirs in “Ave Satani” and Ligeti’s choral Lux Aeterna, Mia Farrow (credited) on the Rosemary’s Baby lullaby, the Get Out main title, and the “Assorted Screams” sound-effect track. Not yet listened through for others.

Made to scare adults: screams, a heartbeat, dissonant strings, and expect some sudden loud moments. Not for small children; the gentler Halloween at the Front Door was made for a porch with trick-or-treaters. Durations are as Spotify lists them.

This is the scary one. Turn the lights off and let it run for the evening, about three hours, and it plays like a night in a haunted house.

It starts outside: wind, a rusty gate, the main title from The Shining, the opening of Tubular Bells from The Exorcist, the lullaby from Rosemary’s Baby. Then a door creaks open and the house takes over: Ligeti’s slow, swelling Lontano, the end title from Poltergeist, a long stretch of haunted-house ambience. Inside, footsteps drag and chains rattle between some of the most unsettling screen scores of recent years: The Witch, It Follows, Hereditary, Under the Skin, Chernobyl.

Then comes the chase: John Carpenter’s Halloween, A Nightmare on Elm Street, Friday the 13th, the shower scene from Psycho, Goblin’s Suspiria, Hellraiser, Get Out, It. Then the clock strikes midnight, and it gets darker and stranger: “Ave Satani” from The Omen, Ligeti’s Lux Aeterna, Penderecki’s Threnody to the Victims of Hiroshima, Morricone’s music for The Thing, Silent Hill 2. The final stretch is the storm before dawn, ending on the long, dread-filled cues from Annihilation and Mandy.

The haunted-house sounds (the creaking doors, rattling chains, heartbeat and the clock striking midnight) come from a Walt Disney sound-effects record, New Chilling, Thrilling Sounds of the Haunted House. This one is for grown-ups. For the trick-or-treaters at the door, the gentler Halloween at the Front Door was made for that. For the costume party, it’s The Halloween Costume Strut.
